Robotic Surgery
In 2013 John Flynn Private Hospital invested in da Vinci Robotic technology. The goal; to ensure patients in South East QLD and Northern NSW were granted access to the most advanced medical technology. The da Vinci Si Surgical System enables our highly skilled surgeons to provide patients with superior minimally invasive surgical options. While Urologists were the first to utilise the da Vinci Surgical System in the advanced treatment of prostate cancer, other specialists such as Gynaecologists, General Surgeons, Colorectal Surgeons and Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeons, quickly saw the advantages for their patients and have since successfully adopted the technology.
As a center of surgical excellence John Flynn Private Hospital proudly offers da Vinci robotic technology and surgical options to several hundred patients each year via highly skilled surgeons and their medical teams.
What is Robotic Surgery?
The da Vinci Surgical System expands the doctors' human capabilities and allows routine and complex procedures to be performed minimally invasively. Via three integrated components, the surgeon controls the da Vinci robot from a surgeon console. The surgeons' hand movements are scaled down to perform tiny movements with-in the body. Optimised 3D vision, magnification and motion tremor control allow the surgeon to operate high-tech instrumentation with greater dexterity and precision than other minimally invasive techniques.
Benefits for Patients
Traditionally many complex procedures would require a large abdominal incision, commonly referred to as "open" surgery; now patients are receiving several small robotic "keyhole" incisions. As a result, our patients are experiencing shorter hospital stays and quicker recoveries. Studies comparing open to robotic surgery have shown:
- A shorter hospital stay
- Less blood loss
- Fewer complications
- Less need for narcotic pain medicine
- A faster recovery
- Smaller incisions associated with minimal scarring
With da Vinci robotic technology our surgeons will enhance clinical outcomes and change how patients experience surgery.
