John flynn surgeon co-authors textbook

A leading surgeon at John Flynn Private Hospital is continuing to share her expertise and educate future specialists, by co-authoring a textbook chapter on obesity and diabetes.

Doctor Candice Silverman is a specialist general surgeon and laparoscopic surgeon at John Flynn Private Hospital on the Gold Coast. Her extensive work performing Robotic Sleeve Gastrectomy there caught the attention of Professor Joel Faintuch who commissioned her to write a chapter in his book titled “Obesity and Diabetes: Scientific Advances and Best Practice”.

Dr Silverman said her chapter explores the question: “Is Robotic Bariatric Surgery an Enabling Technology or a Disruptive Innovation?”.

“The sleeve gastrectomy is now the most common weight loss operation done worldwide and certainly the trend is for more and more minimally invasive operations to be performed using the da Vinci robot by Intuitive,” Dr Silverman said.

“I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to operate on the da Vinci robot with the superb theatre team at John Flynn Private Hospital - who have embraced this phenomenal piece of technology.”

Dr Silverman said the chapter explores the types of robots used now and into the future, the advantages and disadvantages of robotic devices in surgical settings, and the future implications and directions of robotic surgery.

The chapter is suited to anyone with an interest in robotics: from patients to medical specialists to hospital administrators.
