Currently the hospital services 331 beds, which can regularly be
full due to the rising population in the Gold Coast and Northern
Rivers regions.
In addition to the new ward, existing three-bed and four-bed
rooms will also be converted to single rooms. They will be fitted
out with private ensuites, bedside TVs, newspaper delivery each
morning and large windows with ground level views.
The new ward, which will be located on Level 1 of the main
hospital building, will support the construction of two more
operating theatres and the expansion of the hospital’s
emergency department. It is expected to be open by April 2020.
‘E’mergency department
Emergency department patients no longer have to pay out-ofpocket
costs for medical imaging services at John Flynn Private
Hospital, thanks to a partnership with South Coast Radiology.
The new initiative means people who seek urgent treatment at
the facility’s ED could save hundreds of dollars on diagnostic
tests.
South Coast Radiology said the decision was made in an effort to
reduce costs for patients, while increasing accessibility to health
care.
The new initiative is on top of the pre-existing arrangement to
bulk-bill all pathology with a relevant Medicare item number for
emergency department patients. Plans are also underway to
create a similar cost-saving measure for inpatients at John Flynn
Private Hospital.
The new imaging service savings coincide with the expansion of
the hospital’s emergency department. This represents the ‘E’ in
the hospital’s P.O.W.E.R. re-development project.
The ED will double in capacity – from seven emergency bays
and two associated rooms to 14 emergency bays and four
associated rooms. The expansion project should be open by
mid-December 2019.
‘R’enal dialysis
Patients are now using John Flynn Private Hospital’s new
renal dialysis unit, marking a major milestone in the facility’s
re-development.
The 15-chair renal unit, which represents the ‘R’ of the P.O.W.E.R.
project, was moved from the main hospital building to the
John Flynn Cancer Centre, to ensure it was co-located with the
hospital’s new Day Oncology Unit.
John Flynn Private Hospital wanted to keep the association
between the dialysis and cancer areas as there is a synergy
between the operations of these specialties.
The renal dialysis unit has been specially designed to improve
the comfort of patients who visit the hospital regularly from the
local area, interstate and overseas. Staff can care for 29 patients
per day for infusion treatment and dialysis.
Our staff are dedicated to providing high quality care and
treatment and this level of service will continue in the unit’s
new location.
