WHAT IS EOS:
EOS captures whole body
images of a standing patient
in a single scan without any
stitching or vertical distortion.
Frontal and lateral digital
images of any length can be
obtained simultaneously, with
outstanding image quality. EOS
uses two perpendicular X-ray
beams collimated in tw o very
thin, horizontal, fan-shaped beams along with two
detectors born out of Nobel Prize-winning technology. Fanbeam
X-rays and detectors are mounted on a C-arm and
scan all or part of the patient’s body as needed. This allows
for frontal and lateral X-rays of a patient to be carried out
simultaneously.
DOSE REDUCTION WITH EOS:
With medical imaging usage increasing over the last 25
years, reducing the patient’s exposure to X-ray dose has
been a top priority of South Coast Radiology for several
years. The community is becoming increasingly aware of
the risks of o ver exposure to radiation.
The automatic adjustment of the gain of the detector allows
a radical improvement in contrast performance at a very
low dose. Two variable gain detectors detect an extremely
high contrast digital radiograph line by line, while the dose
administered to the patient is less than or equivalent to the
exposure that results from few transatlantic flights.
WHAT SHOULD PATIENTS EXPECT?
The patient stands or sits inside the EOS booth, and then
an X-ray of the whole body is taken in less than 20 seconds.
The EOS exam is performed by a linear scan of the C-arm
and two very fine X-ray beams. The C-arm supports two
separate imaging systems capable of simultaneously
capturing both frontal and lateral images. Digital images
are immediately available on the 2D w orkstation.
OUR EOS EXPERIENCE SO FAR:
EOS is becoming increasingly well known amongst the spinal
community – surgeons, chiropractors, osteopaths and even
well informed patients. Before our installation of the EOS
on the Gold Coast, Queensland patients were travelling via
plane to Sydney or Melbourne on a regular basis to monitor
their scoliosis. This was especially true for younger patients
with parents concerned about the long term effects of
continual radiation exposure from traditional X-rays. With
the EOS reducing the radiation exposure by up to 9 times
compared to regular X-ray it means patients can continue
to have EOS scans with decrease risk of adverse affects
caused by radiation.
The majority of patients receiving imaging for scoliosis
are children or young adults where radiation reduction
is extremely important. In these cases some parents are
willing to go to extreme lengths to protect their children
from unnecessary radiation which means travelling
interstate.
